Lada Niva is now the world's oldest factory-new SUV

The iconic Lada Niva, launched in 1977, is getting a "Sport" edition with a new 1.6-liter engine, 124 horsepower, upgraded gearbox and air conditioning.

The Lada Niva Sport is a new variant of the famous Russian four-wheel drive. The car is based on the original Niva from 1977. The new Sport model has received a significant engine upgrade. It now produces 124 horsepower.

Under the hood is a new 1.6-liter engine with 16 valves. It replaces the previous 1.7-liter engine. The old engine had a 'whole' 83 horsepower.

The power increase is therefore significant for the small car. It gives better acceleration, although it is still not fast.

Lada says the Niva Sport takes almost 12 seconds to reach 100 km/h. That's an improvement. But it also shows that the car is basically 44 years old.

Power is sent through an updated five-speed manual transmission. Lada's parent company, AutoVAZ, has not specified the exact changes to the transmission.

Exterior changes and 4×4 system

Suspension and brakes have also been improved, according to information from Spain, although the exact details of the technical upgrades are unclear.

Externally, the Lada Niva Sport is distinguished by a new front bumper with integrated, narrow daytime running lights.

The car sits on 17-inch rims. The large rims can look a bit aggressive on the compact Niva.

The Niva Sport has permanent four-wheel drive. It is equipped with a transfer case for off-road driving at low speeds. The car also has slightly increased ground clearance.

Modern comfort in a less sporty cabin

Inside, the Niva Sport has been updated with equipment from the Niva Legend model, meaning it now offers more modern comfort.

The driver and front passenger can benefit from heated seats. The car also has electrically adjustable side mirrors and air conditioning.

The Sport model also has special details, including special upholstery on the seats and a sportier steering wheel.

Lada cars have never been sold in North America. However, they are found in parts of Europe and are very common in Russia.

The new Lada Niva Sport is now on its way to dealers in Europe. The starting price is listed at $19,600. This corresponds to around 137,000 Danish kroner after any Danish taxes.

Although Lada is a rare sight in Denmark, there is an interest in robust and simple cars. On Boosted.dk you can read about how Lada had to drop something as simple as ABS brakes when Renault sold the brand back to the Russians for 10 ore.
