The sign, which has been put up in the middle of Stockholm, is illegal. Yet no one has done anything to remove it for 15 years. This is stated by the Swedish Transport Agency.
At the intersection Tégnergatan/Sveavägen in the middle of central Stockholm, there is a strange road sign. It's also illegal, sort of.
Nevertheless, the sign has been able to hang in that exact spot for at least 15 years. Nobody has done anything about the sign or its location.
This is confirmed by the Swedish Transport Agency.
The municipal authorities, which are responsible for the signage in the Swedish capital, are well aware that the sign has been in the city since 2009.
Maybe even longer than that. Google's own Street View archive only goes back to June 2009. But here the sign was also hanging in its illegal place.
But no one, i.a. employees of the responsible authority – the traffic office in Stockholm – can apparently answer why.

– It is not signage that we are working with today, and it is not part of the road sign order. We ask to return when we have more information, reads a written response to Vi Bilägere .
Nor can the authorities come up with an explanation for the meaning of the sign. And the same is the case among motorists. According to Swedish media, it has not yet been decided what will happen to the sign. Only that at some point it must be removed and that no compensation will be forthcoming.
While the authorities in Stockholm will now – or at least at some point – have the illegal signage removed, motorists elsewhere are taking such practical tasks into their own hands.
