Here, Danish drivers can no longer get speed bumps

Italy is currently excluded from the EU's common number plate system, Eucaris. This means that i.a. Danish cars in the country cannot be punished with speeding tickets.

Italy's camera traps have caught many tourists in. But now millions of stalls are floating in uncertainty because the country has been excluded from the EU's common number plate system, Eucaris.

The problem is particularly evident in the popular tourist town of Meran in South Tyrol. There are over 4,000 unpaid stalls with a value of 230,000 euros and collecting dust.

This means that foreigners who have been flashed, have a damaged card or have parked illegally will immediately escape punishment.

After the summer holidays, this unequal treatment of Italian and foreign drivers has become a hot topic in the Italian Parliament. Italian drivers are punished for their offenses as usual.

Julia Unterberger, who has been elected to the Italian Parliament for the South Tyrolean People's Party, is outraged by the situation. She sees it not only as discrimination against Italian drivers, but also as a loss of income for the country's municipalities.

With its 11,000 speed traps, Italy has the highest number of speed traps in all of Europe. According to Bild's information, there are already millions in unpaid tolls from German, Austrian and Dutch drivers.

Unterberger points out that the exclusion from the common EU system, the purpose of which is to fight crime across countries, has created major problems in Italy's tourist areas.

For the same reason, Italy's transport minister, Matteo Salvini, is under pressure to find a solution to the problem. Right now, there is no guarantee that Italy will be able to collect the many speeding tickets.
