Hang out of windows: Motorist convicted of speeding at 40 km/h

Earlier this month, a woman was convicted of speeding because the passengers in her car were hanging out of the side windows at 40 km/h.

A 23-year-old woman has been sentenced to 60 days in prison for driving crazy, where her passengers hung out of the windows. Her car has been confiscated and she has been given an unconditional disqualification from the right of way for a year.

The episode took place on a Friday afternoon in June, when the woman drove at over 40 km/h in heavy traffic in Albertslund and Glostrup. The woman's procession, which stretched over a kilometer and a half, was caught on video.

The court in Glostrup found the woman guilty of both violating the traffic law's rules about reckless crossing and the criminal law's provision about causing danger to the lives of others.

This is what Copenhagen's Vestegns Police write in a press release .

The woman explained in court that she and the passengers were on their way out to celebrate new students. During the journey, she had asked the two passengers several times, who were sitting on the window frame with their torsos out of the car, to get back in.

– It is potentially life-threatening for passengers who sit on the outside of a car at high speed in heavy traffic without any safety.

– If something happens suddenly, or they fall off, they could have been badly injured, says special prosecutor Charlotte Mogelhoj from Copenhagen's Vestegns Police.

The judge emphasized that even though the passengers had contributed to the dangerous situation, it is the driver's responsibility to ensure that the car ride is safe.

An officer from Copenhagen's Vestegns Police observed the dangerous roundabout.

– We work for traffic safety every single day, and we will naturally step in if we find cars with passengers hanging out of the windows, says Police Commissioner Claus Stoltenberg from the traffic department.
