Giant car company blames electric cars for significant losses

At the German rental company Sixt, they have not just chosen to get rid of all Teslas in the fleet. Now electric cars are also being blamed for a worse account.

Back in December last year, the German rental company Sixt announced that it would get rid of all Teslas in the fleet of rental cars.

At Sixt, you are tired of high repair costs and very low resale value. However, the criticism of the electric car does not stop there.

For now, the rental company casts doubt on the relationship between political wishes from several governments and motorists' demand.

The company states this in a press release .

According to Sixt, it has become much more difficult to sell used electric cars. And that alone in the course of 2023. And the company believes it can track this in the accounts.

Falling resale values have meant that Sixt was able to record a profit that fell by 16 percent. This even though revenue actually increased from 3 to 3.62 billion euros.

In the same period, the company can note a result that has shrunk by 16 percent before tax compared to the same period in 2022.

– In Germany alone, prices for these types of cars (used electric cars, ed.) have fallen by more than 20 percent over the past year.

– At the same time, the demand for the electric car has generally not developed the momentum that several politicians have wished for. You just have to look at the number of registrations to find out, says Sixt.

The company says that without the sudden downturn in electric cars, it would have beaten 2022, which was otherwise a record year.

However, Sixt denies that electric cars will completely disappear from the fleet. But it all needs to fit better with what motorists are looking for.

However, Sixt is far from the only rental company fighting against electric cars, which are worth very little on the used market.

The competitor Hertz does the same. But here a car brand has offered to buy the cars back. Read more about it here .
