Germany will ban these tires on October 1, 2024

They haven't been in production since 2017, and that's a good thing. Especially for German drivers. From 1 October 2024, Germany bans the so-called M+S-labelled tyres.

The tires have not been in production since 2017. But there may still be cars fitted with them. And that could become a problem in Germany.

From 1 October, the country bans winter tires with the so-called M+S marking on the country's roads. This is written by several media – i.a. Auto Bild .

Previously, the tire companies used the marking to internally describe a winter/all-season tire which is suitable for use in 'mud and snow'. But it is an arrangement that has been moved away from.

Germany will now introduce a ban, which de facto makes it impossible for the symbol to appear on all tires fitted to all cars in the country.

From October 1, 2025, the only legal winter tires in Germany will be those with the small mountain and snowflake symbol on the sides.

According to Autobild, fines of up to 120 euros, equivalent to DKK 895, will be issued for being caught in a car with 'M+S' tires from 1 October 2024. The fine can be even larger in the event of accidents.

Here at home, after a long debate about the usefulness of making winter tires a legal requirement, the discussion has been allowed. The benefits of a legal requirement are too small, according to the authorities. According to the Swedish Transport Agency, it will not make sense.

Having said that, motorists would do well to follow the rules that are now on the roads. Both at home and abroad. Earlier this year, the completely wrong tires, for example, cost a Dane the start in Norway. Read more about it here .
