Although fire in electric cars belongs to the rarities, they can be engulfed in flames just like any other car, says the head of the Swedish public emergency services.
It is not something that a car owner should fear. But it is also foolish to rule out the risk altogether. The risk of an electric car burning up is there.
This is what Ulf Bergholm, head of MSB, the Swedish body for community preparedness, says in an interview with the media Carup .
– Like all other cars, electric cars can catch fire anywhere; in brakes, wheel bearings, power lines and engines, says Ulf Bergholm.
However, the reasons why electric cars catch fire unexpectedly or not are very different. Recently, however, it has happened in connection with several accidents.
Blue. melted the passengers in an electric car from the Czech brand Skoda when the car hit a tree in Germany. The firefighters on the scene did nothing. And the subsequent extinguishing work cost 14,000 liters of water.

But car fires are very individual, Ulf Bergholm points out. It can also happen incredibly quickly when the flames first take hold of diesel or petrol cars.
– The fastest I've seen is one second, for a diesel car to overheat, says the emergency manager.

Several countries have also started to take precautions against electric cars. In Greece, for example, it is forbidden to board any ferry with more than 40 percent current on the battery pack. And in South Korea, after a violent fire in a parking garage, it has been proposed to completely ban electric cars in such buildings.
