Every second new car in May 2024 was an electric car, and the director of De Danske Bilimportorer, Mads Rorvig, is pleased about that.
May 2024 marked a milestone for the Danish car market, as half of all new cars sold were electric cars. Electric car sales have shown significant growth and progress.
In May, 14,572 new cars were registered, representing an increase of 4 percent compared to May 2023. This upward trend means that car sales so far in 2024 are almost on par with last year.
Mads Rorvig, managing director of De Danske Bilimportorer, states: "We can see that the Danes have a great appetite for new cars right now, because car sales were again strong in the month of May. It is positive that 2024 can keep pace with 2023 , and we predict that 2024 will be a good car year."
The number of new electric cars in May increased by 63 percent compared to the same month last year. 7,241 electric cars were registered, which corresponds to 50 percent of the newly registered cars.

This is a significant increase of 17.9 percentage points from May 2023 and a step towards a greener car fleet in Denmark.
Mads Rorvig emphasizes the importance of the right political preconditions to promote the spread of electric cars: "Electric cars take up significantly more car sales, and the green conversion of the car fleet is in full swing. At the same time, it must not become a sleeping pillow – because the conversion to electric cars requires the right political prerequisites. Among other things, it is absolutely decisive for the introduction of electric cars that taxes are kept at bay."
