Euro NCAP had significantly less to do last year. There were simply fewer cars to smash. At least when compared to the record year 2022.
In 2022, Euro NCAP, which makes a living by assessing the safety of new cars, tested a total of 53 cars. But last year that number dropped drastically.
That's what Autocar writes.
In fact, there were only 18 cars that had to suffer death in the name of safety last year. And that makes the organization long for the car brands.
Euro NCAP believes that the car brands are hiding because the safety requirements have been tightened significantly compared to 2022.

– In 2022, the car brands were eager to test their cars. It showed that the cars lived up to the then regulations, which were however changed in 2023 with new, more challenging test scenarios, says a Euro NCAP spokesman.
However, the organization is not surprised. In fact, it is not unreasonable that car manufacturers 'need more time' to understand how they perform best in the NCAP test, the spokesman believes.
However, new and stricter requirements were not the only reason why fewer cars were tested by Euro NCAP last year.
Several car brands chose to postpone new models and thus extend the life of the current ones. And of course Euro NCAP does not have to test these cars again.
Finally, the corona pandemic also plays a role. Euro NCAP extended the same requirements for new cars a year longer than planned, i.a. because the car brands were already struggling with the shortage of semiconductors, also known as microchips.
