Electric cars pose a safety risk, says Danish workshop

Prevailing myths that electric cars do not need service are now causing the alarm bells to ring at nationwide garage chains.

On top of record high electric car sales in 2023, a new survey from Bilbasen, Elbilkoberne 2024, shows that 70 percent of Danes who expect to buy a car before the end of 2025 expect to choose an electric car.

– We can now see that the vast majority of consumers have decided on an electric car within the foreseeable future.

– We also see that quite a few used electric cars have now really started to be traded, where a relatively short time ago they were mainly new or almost new, says Jan Lang, a market analyst at Bilbasen, in connection with the investigation.

Still, the prospect of significantly more electric cars on the roads makes Jesper Valentin Lund, concept manager at the workshop chain AutoPartner, cry out.

Many owners of electric cars opt out of the regular service, the workshop chain believes. And that's not a good idea. In fact, it is a myth that electric cars can drive around maintenance-free on the roads.

– People look at an electric car differently – as a computer on wheels – and overall we find that many electric car owners, roughly speaking, do not think that an electric car needs maintenance.

– And that causes many to skip the regular service. Many electric cars first point out that they need to be serviced after 24 months, but if you've been driving around for two years and there's been winter weather with road salt and so on, the car isn't doing well.

24 months between services is certainly not compatible with the Danish climate, and the brakes, for example, must therefore be disassembled and cleaned more often than that.

– With an increasing number of electric cars on the roads, which typically weigh over two tonnes, and where a significant part is not maintained sufficiently, it can ultimately affect people's safety, says Jesper Valentin Lund in a press release.

Something else that the survey Electric car buyers 2024 shows is the basic perception of people with electric cars. It is cheaper to maintain.

84 percent of the motorists who were asked think so. But according to Jesper Valentin Lund, regular service is necessary for it to hold true.

– Let me just state that, just like on petrol and diesel cars, there is also a general warranty on all electric cars, if they are serviced according to the regulations.

– In the long run, it is just as important to maintain an electric car, even if many neglect it – otherwise it can end up with expensive repairs, and what is worse , concludes the concept manager.
