Electric cars have more problems than petrol cars, say the owners

Electric car owners report more faults in their cars than petrol car owners do, a new survey shows.

The car is not a piece of trouble-free mechanics. But now owners of electric cars still report more problems than owners of petrol cars do.

This is according to a new survey from the American consumer organization American Consumer Reports .

In the survey, a number of motorists have been asked to answer how many problems they have had with their cars in the past two years, i.e. between 2021 and 2023.

The cars in the survey range from a few months to 23 years old. On the other hand, 330,000 motorists have described their cars in the survey.

The survey is further divided into 20 subcategories of problems that cars typically can and do have. The excitement goes from howling brakes to broken interior parts to engine failure. In other words – the survey is broad!

However, the fact that electric cars have more problems than cars with a combustion engine is only part of what the American investigation has found.

For example, motorists point out that hybrids, even though they are technically more advanced, have fewer problems than pure diesel and petrol cars.

– As more electric cars are introduced to the market and car manufacturers build each model in greater numbers, we see that some of them have problems with the drivetrain, charging and batteries, writes Consumer Reports.

Problems that i.a. plagues cars such as Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia Niro EV and EV6, Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID.4. Problems that Tesla does not have.

On the other hand, the build quality of Denmark's most popular car brand is lacking, concludes the same survey. Still, the result is not a big surprise.

– Most of today's electric cars are manufactured either by established car manufacturers that are new to electric car technology, or by companies like Rivian that are completely new to building electric cars.

– It is not surprising that the area has growing pains, and that it therefore takes some time to find the faults, says Jake Fisher, director of car testing at Consumer Reports.

The American motorists generally report – that is, across powertrains and fuel – that Lexus is the most reliable. The parent group Toyota then follows, while Mini manages to come in third. Chrysler, on the other hand, is at the very bottom of the list of car brand reliability.
