A fire in an electric car meant that three terraced houses burned down completely last year. Now insurance companies are fighting over responsibility.
It was in July last year that a Volkswagen ID.5, just one year old, completely burned down three terraced houses in the Swedish town of Hässelby Villastad. However, the case is not over.
For now, different insurance companies are fighting over who will pay the bill. The fire started in the car, which only had 3,600 kilometers on the odometer.
– The fire started in an electric car that was in a carport at one of the townhouses. The progress of the fire was very fast, said Roger Sverndal, who works at the Swedish rescue service, to Aftonbladet after the fire.
The investigation into the fire has now been completed. And the conclusion is that the flames never came from the big battery. Instead, the fire started in the 12 volt system, which controls all of the car's electronics. However, the damage to the car is so extensive that the conclusion is tainted with some uncertainty.
Two of the townhouses were insured by the same company, which has now sued another insurance company that had taken out a policy on the electric car.

The first insurance company claims that the second is fully responsible on the basis of an EU judgment on liability for cars in traffic. Now the partners have to appear in the district court. How big the bill will be is still uncertain. The houses have not been restored or demolished yet.
