Electric car burned out without warning – removed with forklift

An electric car that was on a lift at a workshop that had closed over the weekend caught fire suddenly and without warning.

The fire department in Carmel, located in the US state of Indiana, was called out to a fire in an electric car at a closed workshop over the weekend.

The car, an Audi e-tron GT, had suddenly and completely without warning burst into flames. The car had been lifted up in a sledge lift with the wheels removed when the firefighters arrived. They had been alerted when the flames in the electric car triggered the workshop's sprinkler system and alarm system.

Carscoops writes this on the basis of a press release that emergency services have posted on Facebook.

Once on the scene, the firemen could ascertain that the workshop was full of soot because the electric car on the lift was burning.

– The first members of the crew were met by heavy roe in the entire workshop area. The firefighters were able to put out the electric car fire on the lift, but since it is lithium ion, it is almost impossible to put it out completely if there is a thermal rush, writes Carmel Fire Department on Facebook.

In order to put out the flames and avoid any possible spread, the firemen had to use a forklift so that the electric car could be moved out of the workshop.

After this, it was necessary to put the wheels on the car so that it could stand on a few skids while the rest of the extinguishing work was underway.

It required lots of firefighters and water to keep the fire under control, the emergency services write.

In the end, they managed to get the flames under control, and loaded the car onto a sweeper that could tow the wreckage away from the workshop and the other buildings.

Audi has twice previously recalled precisely the e-tron GT, which is the sister car to the Porsche Taycan, due to a fault in the battery pack which could lead to a fire.

The fault, which means the battery can short-circuit, has led Audi to advise a number of e-tron GT owners against charging the battery to more than 80 percent. However, the problem that started the fire at the workshop remains unknown. But an investigation has already been launched.

The fire at the workshop broke out just a few days after the US authorities released their report on a fire in a Tesla that was extinguished with 189,000 liters of water. Read more about it here .
