Do electric cars suck less than petrol cars? It is complicated

Too much consideration must be taken when looking at whether the electric car is better for the environment. But on the YouTube channel GasTroll, an honorable attempt is made.

Many motorists still believe in the myth that replacing all fossil fuel cars with electric cars does more harm than good.

The debate about the environmental impact in connection with the production of electric cars is multifaceted and really complex to deal with.

But the video below, which can be found on the YouTube channel GasTroll, still makes an honorable attempt.

Because no matter how you look at it, cars – regardless of propellant/fuel – are a really bad idea. At least from an environmental perspective. It is very difficult to manage without transport on four wheels.

And although GasTroll does not come up with a definitive answer, the video nevertheless throws some important nuances into the debate. Even Volvo has acknowledged that the production of electric cars is stagnating.

And in fact to such an extent that the Swedish-Chinese car manufacturers believe that the CO2 difference between the fossil car and the electric car is vanishingly small. At least over the entire life of the car. Read more about it here.

In the video, GasTroll takes a nuanced picture of where the energy the cars use comes from. According to the Swedish environmental authority Naturvårdsverket, it emits approximately 7.4 tonnes of CO2 alone to obtain enough raw materials for one battery with a capacity of 80 kWh.

According to the Swedes' American counterpart, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an average passenger car in the US emits 4.6 tonnes of CO2 just by driving around.

At home, it is estimated that the average passenger car emits 120 grams of CO2 per short kilometer. That number must then be multiplied by how many kilometers the individual car drives.

According to the insurance company Alka, a Danish family drives an average of 17,000 kilometers a year. This corresponds to 2 tonnes of CO2 per year.

On the other hand, the battery really gains something when it is first picked up from the ground and placed in an electric car. Because the electricity does not need to be made from 'dirty' energy such as coal.
