Almost 20 years ago, the small and expensive Audi A2 disappeared from the model range. Now the model is resurrected as an electric car. But only once.
The Audi A2 is reborn as an electric car on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The original Audi A2 was launched 25 years ago and was known for its low weight and fuel efficiency. The car, which was built in aluminium, weighed in some versions under 900 kg.
But despite the car's advanced design and low consumption, it was never a sales success. High production costs and a price that was on par with larger mid-range cars meant that the model did not find widespread use, and production stopped after just five years.
Audi has now chosen to present a new, electric version of the A2, called the A2 e-tron, but it has so far only been developed as a concept.
This is what Audi writes on LinkedIn .
The concept car has been created by students from Audi's apprenticeship program. The new model is faithful to the original in its overall design, but offers modern technological updates.

Among other things, the traditional mandrel handles have been removed, and the car is equipped with cameras instead of side mirrors and advanced LED lighting.
When the Audi A2 hit the market in the late 1990s, it was one of the most aerodynamic cars available, with a CD value of 0.28.
However, how effective the new electric version will be in this area has not yet been announced. Audi has also not shared many technical details about the new A2 e-tron, leaving many questions about the car's performance and range.
The original Audi A2 was produced between 1999 and 2005 and was designed to be light and fuel efficient. One of the best-known versions was the diesel model, called A2 3L, which could cover up to 33 kilometers on one liter of diesel.
Despite its innovative design and low consumption, manufacturing costs were high and Audi had to sell the car at a loss. This contributed to the production of the A2 being discontinued after a few years.
With this new electric version, Audi marks the 25-year history of the A2, but whether it will actually go into production is yet to be seen.
