Danish municipalities now earn over DKK 1 billion from parking

The Danish municipalities now earn more than DKK 1 billion a year from motorists who have to park. This is shown by a new report from FDM.

It is illegal in several cases when municipalities try to patch up holes in the economy by introducing paid parking. However, this does not change the fact that the municipalities are making record amounts of money at the moment.

In fact, the earnings from paid parking have reached one billion kroner in the Danish municipalities' finances. 57 municipalities currently have parking controls and 25 pay parking.

This is shown by a new report from FDM.

– There is no doubt that it will be more expensive for motorists to park, and for some municipalities it is a convenient income that is used to pay expenses that have nothing to do with motorists or infrastructure, says the chief consultant at FDM, Dennis Long.

FDM has several times been after municipalities, which screw up the paid parking and the rates in order to cover gaps in the economy. Because it's totally illegal.

Blue. in Helsingor. Here, Malthe Jacobsen, who is a city council member for the party Enhedslisten, denies that it has anything to do with a bad economy. On the contrary, the politician defends himself by saying that he just generally wants fewer cars in the city.

Danish motorists will not only have to pay much more in Helsingor – but in general in the coming years – to park. In Odense, for example, it has been decided that by 2030 at the latest it will cost DKK 34 per hour to park in the city.

Elsewhere in the city, they try to keep motorists away by banning parking altogether. This applies, among other things, to in the Hunderup district. The municipality has also decided that by 2030 at the latest it will be twice as expensive to park a diesel or petrol car than an electric car in the city.

However, one thing affects both the first, second and third car type. Odense municipality wants to introduce a speed limit of no more than 30 km/h in most of the city. Elsewhere, the speed must drop to 20 km/h.
