Completely ordinary equipment is almost gone in new cars

The rear window wiper is completely unnecessary in modern cars. Several car brands think so, and therefore remove it.

When was the last time you saw a rear wiper – that is, on a brand new car? No, right?! But this kind still exists, unfortunately. For example, the brand new Suzuki Swift.

But what the small Japanese car has retained is becoming longer and longer between its competitors. It is primarily the electric cars that have to make do without the rear window wiper.

You will not find a rear wiper on, for example, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, MG 4, Toyota bZ4X and the sister car Subaru Solterra. Although there are also petrol cars without.

For example, the Citroën C5 X and Peugeot 408 also drive around without it. And thus an otherwise long tradition in the car industry breaks. According to Swedish Vibilagare, the rear window wiper already appeared in the 1940s, when Americans could order it for new cars.

The reason is simple. The wiper that keeps the rear window clean and clear is no longer needed. At least not if you ask the car brands.

– It is not necessary. The car's aerodynamics and the treatment of the rear window glass means that the water flows away by itself, says Clément Lefèvre, spokesperson at MG, to the Swedish media.

Something else is the question of a consideration of aerodynamics and thus the efficiency of the cars on their way through the air. According to MG, thirdly, motorists would rather have things like heated seats and air conditioning in their new cars.

However, it is not necessarily positive – at least not exclusively – that the rear window wiper disappears. The Swedes refer to a long-term test of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, where the winter's wet weather was 'hanging' on the rear window without the wiper and the often small wiper blade.
