Chinese claim to have electric car battery with 'huge range'

Now, much of what comes from China should be taken with a grain of salt. But battery manufacturer Prologium claims to have cracked the code to 'huge range'.

Chinese battery manufacturer Prologium claims that their new battery pack for electric cars is groundbreaking.

Prologium, known for producing solid-state batteries and collaborating with car manufacturers such as Mercedes, has developed a ceramic battery with what they say is 'impressive' energy density.

In March this year, the battery achieved an energy density of 321 Wh/kg in a test conducted by the German laboratory TÃœV Rheinland.

A new test in December showed a further improvement with an energy density of 359.2 Wh/kg, which exceeded Prologium's own expectations.

In comparison, the best lithium batteries available today have an energy density of around 240 Wh/kg. According to Prologium, the ceramic battery will lead to both lighter batteries and a significantly improved range for electric vehicles.

– This milestone embodies our unwavering spirit of innovation and demonstrates our commitment to leading the market.

"It reflects 18 years of efforts to solve key challenges (in electric cars, ed.) and optimize manufacturing processes," says Vincent Yang, Prologium's founder, in a press release .

Ceramic batteries differ from traditional lithium-ion batteries by replacing the liquid electrolyte in whole or in part with a solid material that is more stable and – according to the Chinese – more environmentally friendly.

Prologium has announced that they will present additional groundbreaking innovations at the upcoming CES show.
