Right now it's just called Firefly. And nothing more. Yet the Chinese car is headed to Europe, where it could become Denmark's cheapest electric car.
A new electric car from the Chinese brand Firefly could become the cheapest on the Danish market. The model, which does not yet have an official name, is expected to cost from 150,000 kroner when it comes to Denmark later this year.
Firefly is a new low-cost brand from Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio. Nio is known for its innovative electric cars with swappable batteries, and the new Firefly model will also have this feature.
The new model was designed in Europe by former BMW and Ford designer Kris Tomasson. The design is inspired by classic European cars, and the Firefly logo depicts a glowing firefly.
In China, the car is expected to cost from approximately 150,000 Danish kroner. However, the price in Denmark has not yet been officially confirmed, and it may be affected by the EU's new punitive tariffs on Chinese electric cars.
"The car is intended to compete with models such as the VW Golf, Toyota Corolla and Peugeot 308," a Nio spokesperson said, according to Chinese CN EV Post .
The Firefly model is expected to go on sale in China in April and in Europe later this year. Nio has ambitious plans for the new brand, aiming to enter 25 new markets.
With a potential price of under 150,000 kroner, the Firefly model could become a serious challenger to the established car manufacturers in Europe. Perhaps even Denmark's cheapest electric car.
Nio has already made a name for itself with its innovative electric cars that offer swappable batteries. This technology allows users to quickly swap an empty battery for a fully charged one at dedicated battery swapping stations.
This feature is also expected to be part of the Firefly model, which could give it an advantage over competitors. Nio plans to establish a network of battery swap stations in Europe, which will make it easier for Firefly owners to keep their cars running.
Firefly's entry into the European market could be a challenge for established car manufacturers. With an aggressive pricing strategy and innovative features, Firefly could attract customers looking for an affordable and practical electric car.
At home, the group also needs a revival. The Nio brand completely flopped in its attempt to sell more expensive cars. The remnants of the Nordic part of the company have fled to Stockholm, and the Danish CEO has long since been fired along with almost all employees. Read more about it here .
