BYD recalls 100,000 electric cars – the steering gear can catch fire

China's BYD has recalled nearly 100,000 Dolphin and Atto 3 models due to a fault in the steering gear that could start a fire. It is not known whether export cars are affected.

Chinese BYD is now recalling almost 100,000 copies of the Dolphin and Atto 3 models in the home country. However, the models are also found in, among other places, Denmark.

Specifically, the Chinese have discovered a defect in the electronic power steering. The weakness can mean that small cracks appear, which over time can lead to overheating and short circuits.

This has led to the fact that the Chinese transport authorities believe that there is a risk of fire in the BYD models.

This is written by Electrek .

The recall concerns 96,714 cars built between November 2022 and December 2023. It is the largest recall BYD has ever initiated.

Both of the affected models are also exported out of China, but BYD has not yet stated whether the export cars are also or may be affected by the error in the steering gear.

It is part of the story that this is only the second time BYD has recalled cars at all. The first time was in 2022, when the brand had been building cars for 17 years.
