By mistake, these car owners have not paid equalization tax

If you own a diesel-powered plug-in hybrid, it is not certain that you have been charged equalization tax. However, the bill is coming now, says the Motor Authority.

The Motor Authority has once again made a mistake. Again, it concerns the collection of car taxes from Danish motorists. Specifically, it is crazy about the equalization tax.

The one that must be collected in addition to CO2 owner tax has not been collected from owners of plug-in hybrid cars with a diesel engine that are registered in Denmark between 1 July 2021 and 24 June 2024.

The equalization tax is something that all owners of diesel cars in Denmark must pay, because diesel as a fuel is taxed lower than petrol. From 1 January 2025, however, the taxation of the fuel will be closer to each other. Read more about it here .

The Danish Motor Agency does not want to blame itself, but instead blames an error in the Motor Register. The authority states this on its website .

Drivers in diesel-powered plug-in hybrids do not escape the bill for the amounts owed either. It's coming now.

From 25 June 2024, the Motor Register has been adapted, as the authority calls it, so that it is now possible to collect the equalization tax in addition to the CO2 owner tax.

However, the change will be carried out in several stages, so that the owners of the affected corrals along the way will be notified. But even if it is a mistake by a public authority, motorists are not allowed to keep the money.

Incidentally, it is not the first time that the Motor Authority does not have control over how taxes are collected. For a long period between 2012 and 2019, no reminders were issued for unpaid periodic charges. The authorities did nothing about motorists who owed weight tax or green tax. Well, not because the error was discovered in June 2019.
