Built cars for the police – now they are bankrupt

It is not only in Denmark that the authorities have to save. Swedish police have cut back so much that the company that rebuilds cars for them has gone bankrupt.

A company that specially builds police cars for the Swedish police has gone bankrupt.

The company has lost crucial contracts, and after the police cut back on its purchases and orders, bankruptcy was the only solution, it says.

According to director David Klövmyr, the company had expected an order for 400 police cars. But the police only ordered a conversion of 25 cars, which could not cover the company's costs.

The Swedish police use several different car models as police cars, including Volvo as well as Volkswagen models such as Touareg, Tiguan and Passat.

The company SVOP, Special Vehicles Operations, has since 2013 specialized in rebuilding the Volkswagen Touareg for the specific needs of the police. But 11 years later, it's all closed again.

SVOP, which at its peak employed 21 employees, has primarily carried out remodeling work for the police, customs and rescue services.

Previously, the company, which is an offshoot of ANA, also built the cars that Saab delivered to the Swedish law enforcement.

According to the director, with the drastic drop in orders, the company has become financially impossible to continue operating, which is why a bankruptcy petition has also landed in the bankruptcy court. In connection with the bankruptcy, 13 employees are now without a job.

The situation may have consequences for the Swedish police's future choice of uniform. Since SVOP no longer rebuilds the cars that Volkswagen supplies to the police under contract.

The bankruptcy may also mean that the police will in future only drive in Volvo models. Several police officers have expressed concern that the Volvo cars are not spacious enough for daily use. At least not for what the police have to use the cars for.

The bankruptcy also means that SVOP's assets and facilities are now for sale. Curator of the bankruptcy estate Stefan Skeppstedt has confirmed that there have been some interested parties. But there are still no concrete agreements in place. It will therefore require a new buyer from the bankruptcy estate if the conversion of Volkswagen police cars is to continue in Sweden.
