Two teachers have scored big on the sale of a rare Ferrari. However, they had to fight for a long time to even get their hands on the car.
A 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California, once purchased for just 17,000 Danish kroner, has now been sold at auction for an incredible 125 million kroner.
The story of this Ferrari is at least as remarkable as its price. In the 1970s, two teachers, Charles Betz and Fred Peters, found the wrecked car on the property of well-known scrap dealer Rudi Klein.
They visited the place frequently and repeatedly asked if they could buy the car. After two years, Rudi Klein relented and sold the Ferrari to them for $2,400, equivalent to 17,000 Danish kroner.
The teachers, who were Ferrari enthusiasts, added the car to their collection of cars and spare parts. While they sold many other cars, they kept the Ferrari because they thought it was something unique. And they were right.
In the early 00s, they decided to restore the car. They carried out an extensive renovation and restored the car to its original condition. It was later painted in the original color, Azzurro Metallizzato, and the seats were upholstered in light leather.
When the restoration was complete, the Ferrari was put on display. It attracted a lot of attention and won several awards. According to the auction house Gooding & Co, which handled the sale, the car looks exactly as it did when it left the factory.
This 250 GT SWB California is an example of how a forgotten car can be transformed into a valuable classic. History shows that even a scrapyard find can hold hidden treasure.
