BMW was able to take home a total of three awards – and the main award "The Golden Wheel" – from the award ceremony of the same name. "The electric car is not for everyone", says director Oliver Zipse.
BMW cleared the drill when the Bild newspaper handed out awards this weekend in connection with the Das Goldene Lenkrad award ceremony. And on stage, the car brand's director Oliver Zipse was in no doubt – "the electric car is not for everyone", he said.
– Diversity is our recipe for success. Therefore, our cars remain as diverse as our customers. Where better to see this than at The Golden Wheel?
– The BMW 540d Touring is a modern and highly efficient diesel – and at the same time the Mini Cooper SE is a compact electric car.
– For us, there is no difference between the supposed old world and the perhaps new world: Every customer gets the latest technology in their car, regardless of the type.

From the stage, Oliver Zipse did not hold back from calling the EU's political demands absurd. At least when it comes to electric cars. Especially because there has been a tariff on Chinese cars on top of that.
– The politicians demand that the car brands build relatively cheap electric cars, so that customers can switch more quickly. And then the EU Commission decides on tariffs that make precisely these chore clothes artificially more expensive.
As one of very few car brands, BMW has long maintained that it will neither set a date for the phasing out of the internal combustion engine nor build only electric cars. Toyota says the same elsewhere.
In recent months, however, several of the car brands that have otherwise said that they will only build electric cars have regretted it. Blue. Volvo has called it 'an easy decision' to drop the ceiling on only building electric cars.
Incidentally, the Golden Wheel has been awarded since 1976 and is given to a number of different new and used cars in several categories. In addition to the main prize, BMW won this year for best used car with the 3 Series G20 and the best car in the 'upper middle class' with the latest 5 Series Touring.
