BMW doesn't make 'Mercedes mistakes' – never build this car

There are several BMW offers for a pickup. But no brand will ever make the same mistake as Mercedes and build a pickup truck.

Mercedes, for a brief note, thought they were going to build a pickup truck. The Germans therefore created the X-Class using Nissan Navara technology.

However, the car turned out to be a sales disaster and after just 2 years on the market was pulled from the model range again.

Now BMW denies making the same mistake. Because while the brand from Bavaria will not rule out an even more hardcore SUV, a pickup will never get the spotlight on the executive floor.

This is what BMW's deputy director for brand management Bernd Körber says in an interview with the niche media BMW Blog.

– I believe that a pickup is not something this brand should touch. But in principle I would say that a brand like BMW should differentiate itself by making drum cars.

– To bring out the essence of BMW, we need niche models, says Bernd Körber.

But a pickup is not among these niche models. Even though BMW has actually tried this sort of thing. We know, for example, that in the 80s BMW cut the rear of an E30 Series and used it as transport around the factory in Munich.

Many years later – definitely in 2019 – BMW built another pickup. This time on the basis of an X7. However, that model did not make it further than the prototype stage either. Read more about it here.

On the other hand, Bernd Körber acknowledges that there may be an idea in moving into markets that have so far been dominated by the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser. Here there is a much greater interest among motorists, Körber believes.
