BMW against ban: Builds diesel and petrol cars after 2035

BMW's head of development Frank Weber refuses to call the internal combustion engine an outdated technology. The brand sticks to both petrol and diesel, even if the EU bans it in 2035.

In just 11 years, it will be the end of new diesel and petrol cars if they cannot run on synthetic fuel.

At least that's what the EU thinks after the ban was voted through parliament last year. But that doesn't mean the world to BMW. The Germans will not leave the internal combustion engine lying around.

This is what the brand's development manager Frank Weber says in an interview with the newspaper Focus .

– We will continue to invest and develop petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines.

– Especially because it is not just about the fact that there are new, stricter emission limits in Europe. It is a global process, says Frank Weber.

According to BMW, the decision, which also means that the brand refuses to set a date for the phasing out of the internal combustion engine, is linked to the general uncertainty surrounding electric cars.

– The uncertainty surrounding funding also contributes to this dilemma. This complicates product planning for the individual car manufacturer. That is why it is so important for BMW to invest in flexibility when it comes to powertrains, says the development manager.

The fact that BMW refuses to leave the internal combustion engine is not the same as a write-off of the electric car. In fact, last year the brand from Munich could note that they sold 75 percent more electric cars than the year before.

On the other hand, it is not an expression that BMW wants to throw itself into the price war that Tesla started a year and a half ago with massive price drops on brand new cars.

Frank Weber claims that he does not understand how Tesla and the Chinese brands can keep a business going. But the fact is that Tesla has recently cut even more off the price of new cars. Read more about it here .
