Belgium introduces 'Danish' ban in traffic law

In Belgium, people are now so tired of foreign motorists running away from parking and speed booths that the country is tightening the traffic law following the Danish model.

In Denmark, foreigners who do not have residence in the country must, for example, pay a speeding ticket immediately.

And now the Belgians are so tired of fighting with foreigners running away from their stalls that the country is introducing exactly the same principle.

This is written by the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad .

According to the newspaper, the new rule will come into force on 1 January 2025. If the authorities subsequently assess that the police made a mistake or that the fine is unfair, the motorist will get the money back.

The minimum fine for foreigners driving under the influence of alcohol in Belgium is 1,260 euros. This corresponds to 9,400 Danish kroner.

If the driver cannot pay, the vehicle is immediately seized and detained for 96 hours. If you want your car, motorcycle or other vehicle back, you must pay the fine and the cost of towing and storage.

The rule comes into effect if the driver blows himself to a blood alcohol level of 1.2 or more. This corresponds to having drunk between 5 and 6 ol. The Belgians also believe that they have a good reason to introduce the new fines.

For example, just 27 percent of the Bulgarian drivers who get a ticket in Belgium pay what they owe to the state treasury.

In Belgium's neighboring country Germany, the police are currently trying to find out who drove too fast past a photo van in an Audi RS 2. Because it cannot be the 'person' behind the wheel. Read more about it here.
