At Renault, a 110 km/h limiter is optional.

Perhaps the cheapest optional equipment from Renault ever is an electronic limiter that prevents speeds above 110 km/h.

The popular Renault Clio can now be equipped with a speed limiter in France. The solution is aimed at young drivers to increase road safety.

Young drivers in France can now get an extra safety feature in their Renault Clio. The car brand is offering a speed limiter that locks the car's top speed at 110 kilometers per hour. The measure is an attempt to reduce the number of road accidents among young people.

The car brand writes this in a press release .

Statistics from France also paint a picture when it comes to road safety. People under the age of 35 are involved in over half of all fatal accidents on the roads. This is the background against which Renault's new offer must be viewed.

The idea is to provide technical assistance, especially to new and inexperienced drivers. A lower potential top speed can reduce the risk of serious accidents. Renault hopes that this can make a positive contribution to accident statistics.

The installation of the speed limiter is done at an authorized Renault workshop. It is not something that the car owner can install or remove themselves. The process requires professional equipment and knowledge.

The price for installing the lock is relatively modest. Customers pay the equivalent of approximately 400 Danish kroner for the installation. This is a one-time cost.

Safety for young drivers in focus

If the car owner later wants the limiter removed, that is also possible. However, it requires another visit to the workshop. This ensures that the function cannot simply be turned on and off at will.

Although the car's maximum speed is limited to 110 km/h, it is important to remember the traffic laws.

The speed limiter does not prevent the driver from exceeding local speed limits. On roads with lower speed limits, the car can still drive too fast.

The responsibility for adhering to speed limits still lies with the driver. The speed limiter is only a supplement and not a substitute for responsible driving. It primarily works on motorways and expressways.

Renault's initiative is currently limited to the French market. There is no information on whether the system will be offered in other countries. It will likely depend on the experience in France.

Several other car manufacturers have similar systems. Some brands offer special keys or profiles for young drivers. They can limit both top speed and the volume of the car's system.

Renault Clio and speed limit

These systems are designed to give parents peace of mind. They can ensure that the car is not being used for reckless driving by young people. It is a technological approach to a well-known problem.

Renault's solution, however, is more permanent, requiring a workshop visit. It differs from systems that can be activated and deactivated via a key. The choice of method reflects different philosophies about safety.

The French carmaker is known for its smaller cars like the Clio. The model is popular with many, including young first-time buyers. Therefore, it makes sense to introduce safety measures here.

The future will show whether the initiative has the desired effect on accident statistics. It will also show whether the concept spreads to other countries and car models.
