People in electric cars have to get used to a new reality in several places in the world. Most recently, the US state scrapped a 20-year-old tax rebate.
For the past 20 years, people who buy either new or used electric cars in the state of New Jersey have been able to avoid paying sales tax.
The 6.6 percent VAT has actually also been exempted from the rental and leasing of electric cars. But it's over now.

The scheme will be gradually phased out over the next three years. However, it is not the end of benefits for people in electric cars in the American state.

There will still be a state pool that motorists can apply to in order to get the state to pay some of the price of a new electric car.
Motorists whose application is approved can look forward to getting $4,000 from the state in return for the purchase of a new electric car. Last year, the program was temporarily paused because the state had underestimated how many drivers would like $4,000.
That being said, a political majority in New Jersey has already settled on a position that a majority in California has.
This means that from 2035 the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars will be banned. A ban the EU also adopted last year.Read more about it here .
However, New Jersey is not alone in removing subsidies for electric cars. In Germany, they are even further ahead with that decision. Last year in December, the country's government immediately stopped all public support for electric cars.
