All new petrol cars must look like electric cars, says BMW

BMW Group chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk says all future models will have the same "look" regardless of powertrain.

BMW has revealed that its future design strategy will apply to both electric and petrol cars.

The Bavarian automaker has decided that the new design language seen in its Neue Klasse concept cars will be used across all future models, whether powered by electricity or traditional combustion engines.

The decision also applies to future hybrid cars. The design will therefore be recognisable, regardless of which drivetrain the customer chooses, it says.

This was confirmed by Adrian van Hooydonk, who is responsible for design at the BMW Group, in an interview with Top Gear.

To the media, the head of design says that all future models from BMW will have the same basic design identity.

According to van Hooydonk, there will be some minor differences in the proportions between electric cars and petrol cars, but the overall appearance and experience of the cars will be the same.

– It will not be difficult for customers to choose a car.

– They will get modern BMWs, regardless of which drivetrain they prefer, says van Hooydonk.

This indicates that BMW's customers, perhaps more than ever before, can expect cars that look both similar to each other and sound the same, regardless of drivetrain.

BMW's design manager also emphasized that the upcoming production cars will not differ much from the concept cars.

– i3 and i8 were very close to their concept cars, and the same will happen here. If anything, I prefer production cars because they are a bit more compact.

– We have exaggerated the length and width a bit in the concept cars, but the overall look will be the same, he says.

With this approach, BMW wants to create a consistent design line across all their models, while giving consumers the opportunity to choose the technology that best suits their needs, writes Top Gear.
