Alfa Romeo will not become a Chinese brand, promises the boss

Alfa Romeo is not leaving Europe to get into Chinese hands, said Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares when he presented the new electric car, the Milano.

Alfa Romeo is not what it used to be.

Still, Stellantis group chief executive Carlos Tavares called the Italian marque the 'crown jewel' of the group when he unveiled the brand's new car 'Milano' this week.

The car, which is another electric crossover, gets up to 240 horsepower. But at least as interesting was all the 'outside talk' in connection with the presentation to the world press.

For that occasion, Carlos Tavares used to state that no Stellantis brand – not even Alfa Romeo – is for sale.

And not at all to the Chinese, who have otherwise been preying on former European brands for the past several years.

For example, Chinese Geely has bought parts in both Aston Martin and Mercedes, while it has full control of brands such as Volvo and Lotus.

But the Chinese will not come close to Stellantis, assured Carlos Tavares.

– Friends, it's not going to happen at Stellantis, it's not going to happen with Alfa Romeo, said Tavares, referring to the Chinese takeover.

The managing director also rejected rumors that the world's fourth largest car group is well underway with withdrawing from Italy, car production in the country and Fiat. In fact, the director calls it outright 'fake news'.

It is not yet known when, or at what price, Alfa Romeo intends to launch the new electric car Milano in Denmark.
