People stay away – Volvo regrets special factory

Customers are leaving to such an extent that Volvo Truck cannot justify building a new battery factory in the Swedish town of Mariestad just yet.

Volvo will build a new battery factory for truck batteries in the Swedish city of Mariestad. But it won't be now or next year.

The demand for electric trucks is simply not big enough for that. According to information from Skaraborg's Allehanda , it is now unknown when Volvo Truck will take the first sod at the factory.

– We will review the schedule. We must match the start of production with the demand. It is not increasing as we would like, says Jörgen Gustafsson, head of communications at Volvo Mariestad.

It is not more than two years ago that Volvo Truck presented a plan that the construction of the factory should begin in 2024. That is, this year. Production of batteries was due to begin in 2028 at the latest, to reach full capacity just two years later.

Later, the plan for the first sod was moved to 2025, but now that is not going to happen either. According to Volvo Truck, this is because the green transition is going slower than expected.

The same picture is seen in the world of passenger cars, where the car brands are in a row to drop ceilings on only building electric cars. Most recently, Volvo Cars has announced that you cannot do without the petrol car in 2030.

Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen say the same. On the other hand, a brand like Opel is adamant that the electric motor is the only solution.

Back in Sweden, it is not just Volvo Trucks that is lagging behind when it comes to battery factories. The company Northvolt, which has lost a billion dollar contract with BMW, and noted several deaths among employees, is now under such pressure that people have to be fired.
