DKK 14 billion missing – car battery factory lays off employees

It is still unclear how many positions will be cut. But Swedish Northvolt is facing an acute crisis that is forcing them to fire employees.

The Swedish manufacturer Northvolt, which hopes to make a living by supplying electric car batteries, is to fire several employees.

The company itself announces this in a press release .

Northvolt is in the midst of an acute cash shortage. It is, among other things, the result of BMW getting tired of waiting for a series of battery deliveries and therefore canceling a contract worth 14 billion Danish kroner.

It is still unclear how many employees will now receive a layoff notice, but Northvolt has previously stated that it has around 3,000 employees on the payroll at the so-called Northvolt Ett Upstream 1 factory in Skellefteå alone.

The same factory will be partially closed for the time being in connection with the restructuring. Right now, the factory management is in the process of notifying the employees' unions. The management themselves say that they will 'do everything to minimize the number of redundancies'. But that layoffs cannot be avoided at the same time.

The press release also states that Northvolt is considering divesting its factory in Gdansk, Poland. Just as you will look for collaboration partners for projects in Canada and Germany.

Plans for another factory in the Swedish town of Borlänge will also not come to fruition. Peter Carlsson, who is the managing director of Northvolt, guarantees some 'tough measures'.

– With the initiation of a strategic review, we must take some tough measures to secure the basis for Northvolt's business, improve our financial stability and strengthen our operational performance, says the director.

However, Northvolt is not only in financial trouble. Earlier, Boosted was able to tell that four employees at the factory had died. Read more about it here .
