Volkswagen revives iconic model designation

In 1990, Volkswagen sent a so-called Fire and Ice edition of the Golf Mk. II on the street in Germany. The car had a special purple paint. Now the name is making a comeback.. on an electric car.

It has been 34 years since Volkswagen sent the Golf Mk. II Fire and Ice on the streets of Germany. Some of the cars later came to Denmark.

But now it's here again. The model designation that is. This time it is the ID.3 electric car that has 'gone beyond'. Specifically, the new name is ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice.

Only very dedicated Golf fans may remember the Fire and Ice original. But Volkswagen says that the model was an unexpected success, which later gained cult status in the automotive world.

34 years later, the electric car, like the Golf, has a purple exterior. Volkswagen calls the color Electric Violet. Even though the color, depending on the light, can actually be perceived as both black, dark blue and purple.

Unfortunately, Volkswagen does not do the same with the interior. Instead, the cabin consists of black fabric seats with a small zipper in the middle. If the seat cover is zipped up, there is a small Fire+Ice emblem inspired by the original.

Because the model is based on the ID.3 GTX Performance, this means a single electric motor with a total of 326 horsepower and 545 newton meters. Something that makes the car accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h.

In comparison, the original Golf Mk. II Fire and Ice up to 160 horsepower in the G60 GTI edition. According to Volkswagen, it had only planned to produce 10,000 Fire and Ice models in the 1990s. This resulted in 16,700 cars.

Not quite that many need to be built of the new ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice. Not at all actually. Only the one car that Volkswagen has just presented in the Swiss city of Locarno will be built.
