Sales of electric cars in Germany collapse by 68.8 percent

For the 8th month in a row, sales of new electric cars have collapsed in Germany. August fell by 68.8 percent. This causes the government to promise new state support.

For the 8th month in a row, sales of electric cars suffer without government subsidies. Compared to August 2023, 68.8 percent fewer electric cars were sold in the same month this year.

This is shown by figures from the German response to the Swedish Transport Agency – Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA.

Overall, however, the market for new cars has also declined significantly. In fact, a total of 28 percent more cars were sold in Germany just a year ago.

At Volkswagen, the finance director warns that the employees must get used to a future where millions of cars will be missing from the order books. Read more about it here .

If you look at the figures more individually, it is among the German and German-owned brands that the decline is worst. Mini can note a decrease of 45 percent, Audi fell by 37 percent, BMW by 23 percent, while Mercedes fared best of the worst hit with a minus of 'only' 16 percent.

At Volkswagen, it managed to hold on to a market share of 18 percent – which is the largest among the German brands on the domestic market – but here, too, a loss in the number of sales had to be recognized by 23 percent.

If you then look at the electric cars, it looks even worse. Fortunately, the registrations of electric cars in August progressed by 12.7 percent. But this is because cars, which were sold earlier in the year, only now have number plates on them.

Even sales continue to plummet. Which has been the case ever since Germany's so-called light regulation of a government removed government subsidies for electric cars with immediate effect in December.

In January 2024, sales fell by over 50 percent. And it just continues like that. In June and July, sales fell by 16 and 37 percent respectively, for it was almost minus 69 percent in August.

Immediately after, Volkswagen began to threaten that the brand is looking at the possibility of closing factories in Germany for the first time ever. This led the government to promise to reintroduce certain forms of support for new electric cars. Read more about both parts here .
