Sweden refuses to reintroduce state subsidies for electric cars

According to the Swedish environment minister, care must be taken when introducing subsidies for electric cars. Therefore, there will also be no state support for Swedish electric cars.

Germany has this week announced that it will reintroduce state support for electric cars. But in Sweden, Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari refuses to do the same.

She tells Carup that.

The Minister of the Environment was asked to deal with the question after Germany reintroduces the tax support for electric cars on the basis of an eight-month long collapse.

But that is out of the question in Sweden. At least not again. The initiative cost the taxpayers billions, and they will not have to go through that again, the environment minister believes.

– The support for electric cars, which was introduced by the entrenched government, was an expensive reform that has burdened taxpayers with a total of 20 billion Swedish kroner since 2019.

– The bonus increased sales of electric cars and established a functioning secondary market for electric cars, says Romina Pourmokhtari to Carup.

Instead, according to the Minister of the Environment, the Swedish government is now betting on the conversion of heavier transport to begin. This means trucks, buses and work machines. Because here the development has 'not reached that far', says the minister.

The Netherlands will also not help keep the hand under the electric cars and their owners for much longer. Already from 1 January 2025, taxes will be imposed on ownership, and the tax discount available on new electric cars will gradually be phased out. In fact, the tax discount has already become significantly smaller.

Back in Sweden, the last remnant of the tax discount for electric cars disappeared precisely on November 9, 2022. At the time, the argument was that electric cars were approaching fossil cars in price.

However, it is not the end of subsidies for electric cars in Sweden. The government has introduced a scrappage premium, which can only be obtained by scrapping a diesel/petrol car and choosing an electric car. However, that arrangement also receives criticism. Read more about it here .
