Volvo's new electric car factory lacks 70 percent of electricity

Volvo Cars' new factory for electric cars is threatened by the lack of electricity. Gothenburg alone, where the factory is to be located, lacks 70 percent of electricity.

In the future, Sweden's energy consumption may increase with the effect from the next one complete nuclear power plant per year. And that goes beyond Volvo's new electric car factory.

The factory, which will be located in Torslanda in Gothenburg municipality, may be affected by the fact that there is simply not enough electricity. And that even though the first sod for the factory has already been taken.

According to Göteborg Energi, there is a need for the amount of energy in the only Swedish municipality to increase by 70 percent.

Gothenburg-Posten writes.

In addition to the factory in Gothenburg, Volvo will also build a battery factory in the city of Mariestad. But it can be very expensive for the Swedish taxpayers to ensure that Volvo has enough electricity to build electric cars.

– It's like when the fuse blows in the machines at home because the voltage is too high. When it comes to the power grid on a large scale, you want to avoid it.

– It is very expensive and time-consuming to replace substations, says Lars Edström at Göteborg Energi Nät, to the newspaper.

Volvo believes that wind energy – at least in the short term – can cover the need for electricity at the new factory in Gothenburg.

– When it comes to different energy sources, the most important thing for us is that they can deliver fossil-free electricity – when we need it and at a competitive price.

At the moment, wind power is the only type of electricity that can generate enough energy to meet our needs until 2030, writes Pär Arvidsson, responsible for business and energy strategy at Volvo Cars, to the newspaper.

However, Volvo has other and at least equally pressing problems than just a factory without enough electricity. The first tests of the brand's new electric flagship, the EX90, reveal a car that is full of errors. Read more about it here .
