Now every 10th passenger car in Denmark is an electric car

Now every tenth car in Denmark is a pure electric car. The upcoming zero-emission zones will punish people in other cars even more, says the director.

In Denmark, pure electric cars now make up 10 percent of the total passenger car fleet. This milestone has been reached just a few months after Mobility Denmark announced that the number of electric cars in the country had reached a quarter of a million.

This development underlines the rapid pace at which electric car sales are increasing in Denmark. Even if it is artificially kept up by lenient taxation.

Still, the Danish car importers fear that the Danes will lose interest in electric cars. Read more about it here .

Several factors contribute to the increasing proportion of electric cars on Danish roads. The continued expansion of the charging infrastructure, a wider selection of electric car models and favorable tax exemptions have made it economically attractive for Danes to choose electric cars.

In addition, it has been decided that from the turn of the year the municipalities can establish zero-emission zones in the cities, where only electric and hydrogen cars may travel. This is expected to become a central tool in the efforts to promote greener transport.

However, a municipality such as Odense has already refused to introduce zero emission zones. On the other hand, the municipality will force motorists to slow down to 20 km/h in Funen.

– It is impressive to see how electric car sales have skyrocketed. Every month, the number of electric cars on the roads grows, and this is a clear sign that we are moving in the right direction towards greener passenger transport.

– Passenger cars account for approx. 20 percent of the CO2 emissions in Denmark, and therefore there is also a big climate gain by switching to modern engines and in particular by switching to electric or hydrogen cars, Mads Rorvig, managing director of Mobility Denmark, in a press release .

He adds that the planned zero emission zones will accelerate this development.

– If the tax on electric cars is kept down, electric car sales will really take off in the coming years. The zero-emission zones will give impetus to the development, as the municipalities will be given the opportunity to limit access to the cities for zero-emission cars.

– And it is expected to be used extensively. Aarhus municipality has already planned to introduce a zero-emission zone in the city centre, and we expect that more municipalities will soon follow suit.

This combination of economic incentives, technological advances and new regulations all point in the direction of a continued increase in the number of electric cars in Denmark.
