Sales of the most popular electric cars in Europe are plummeting

Just because you're popular doesn't mean you can keep up the steam. The big brands are also suffering from Europeans turning their backs on the electric car.

Things are going badly for the electric car at the moment. At least if you look beyond Denmark's borders. And compared to 2023, things are really going badly.

Even the most popular electric cars are experiencing a decline. In the top 5 on the overall sales list from all 27 EU countries, sales have declined for four of the cars.

And the car, the Volvo EX30, which has not gone back, is so new that it was not on the market at all in the month that the analysis company Jato Dynamics has taken as its starting point – namely July 2023.

In one year, sales of electric cars have fallen by an overall 6 percent. This corresponds to a sale of 139,000 electric cars in the whole of July 2024.

Tesla and Model Y still hold on to first place, even with a good margin down to the new Volvo. This even though Tesla's sales have actually declined by 16 percent.

It shows what a crazy 2023 the American car brand had. At home, the record year meant, among other things, that Tesla broke Opel's 37-year-old record. Read more about it here .

One thing, however, is what a Model Y can pull in sales alone. Because overall, there is now a brand that sells better than Tesla overall. It's probably a few hundred cars, but BMW now sells more electric cars than Tesla.

However, the decline cannot only be explained by a certain level of satiety among motorists. Several European countries have also started to cut or completely drop state subsidies for electric cars. Most recently, the Netherlands has announced that it will be partially over from 2025. Read more about it here .

In addition, especially the electric cars that are produced and/or owned by Chinese groups are hard hit by a new punitive tariff. A duty which is set to become permanent in just a month's time.
