World champion reveals: Formula 1 team is for sale

If you ask Nico Rosberg, Alpine's entire Formula 1 team is up for sale. The 2016 world champion has been offered a stake.

It has been rumored for a long time that Renault wants out of Formula 1. The French factory will not put more money into the team, which is now called Alpine. And now Nico Rosberg thinks it is good enough.

He says this in connection with his job as a commentator for Sky F1 this weekend in connection with the Grand Prix at the Monza circuit.

– I have received an email saying that I can buy into Alpine. Alpine is very profitable, but that can change, says Rosberg in conversation with David Croft.

Renault's former team manager, Flavio Briatore, who was pardoned earlier in the season and brought in as an adviser, has otherwise stubbornly denied all rumors of a sale. Most recently a week ago.

– It is very clear. Nothing is for sale. Luca de Meo (Renault's director, ed.) does not wish to sell the team. The question is not up for discussion, Briatore said firmly during the Dutch Grand Prix, which is not more than a week old.

At the same time, however, it has emerged that Alpine has secured an engine supply from Mercedes. That agreement can apply as early as the 2025 season if or when Renault pulls the plug.

Nor is it more than a few days ago that employees in Renault's engine department in Viry-Châtillon outside Paris notified the rest of the management in writing that they wanted to stop work. All in protest that the brand intends to scrap Formula 1.
