These cars are often stolen – thieves prefer electric cars

Car thieves – just like law-abiding car owners in general – most often go after the popular cars. This means that electric cars are at risk, according to a new report.

At home, Toyota is number three. So in the new car statistics. We have to go down a bit further to find sales from sister brand Lexus.

But that does not change the fact that car thieves have increasingly started to make off with and make off with models from the two brands.

This is shown by a report from the Swedish Larmtjänst .

However, the cars from the Japanese group are not thieves' favorite things on four wheels. At least not in Sweden. Here, it is Volvo models that are stolen the most.

A total of 469 Volvos were stolen in the course of the first half of the year. Volkswagen follows with 283 owners who are missing their cars, while the same is the case for 237 BMW owners.

In total, 2,783 cars have been stolen in six months just over on the other side of the Øresund. And even if it sounds like a lot – which it is – car theft is becoming less and less of a problem.

Last year alone, 2,972 cars were stolen in the same period. Of the wanted cars, 907 pieces – or 33 percent – have still not been found.

At the same time, the statistics also show that thieves are increasingly looking for new or newer cars. At least 37 percent of the cars that are stolen are from model year 2017 onwards.

Electric cars are also being stolen more often. Although the Swedish authorities have 'only' registered 70 thefts of electric cars in the first half of 2024, this is more than in the first half of 2023. In addition, there are a number of hybrid cars.

Tips on how to reduce the risk of car theft:

  • Always check that the car is properly locked before you leave it.
  • Park the car in the garage if you have one.
  • Have lighting in the garage entrance that turns on automatically in the event of movement.
  • Treat your car like a valuable item – do n't store it right inside the main door.
  • If your car is equipped with key-free operation, it may be an idea to store the key itself or the key card in a metal box, so that the signal is harder for thieves to pick up/decode.
  • Use alarm system/ a GPS tracker
