55 percent of new cars in Denmark run on electricity

Artificially favorable conditions make electric cars popular like never before. In August, the electric car accounted for 55 percent of new car sales in Denmark.

In August 2024, 12,854 new passenger cars were registered in Denmark, which is a minor decrease compared to August 2023.

Overall, the number of registered new cars in Denmark this year has increased to 110,694, which represents a modest increase of 1.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

The sale of electric cars showed a significant increase in August, when 7,050 new electric cars were registered.

This corresponds to an increase of 48 percent compared to August 2023. Electric cars thus accounted for 55 percent of total new car sales, making them the most popular fuel. The upcoming zero-emission zones, which have been adopted in Aarhus, among others, are expected to accelerate this development further.

– We have reached a point where more than half of the new cars in Denmark run on electricity, and this is good news for the green transition.

– We expect that the development will soon take another leap when the municipalities get the opportunity to introduce zero-emission zones, says Mads Rorvig, managing director of Mobility Denmark.

– Car sales in August show a slight decline. However, we expect a reasonable overall result for the car year 2024. We are happy about the great interest in new cars in Denmark, says Mads Rorvig further.

At the same time, Rorvig is at the head of an interest organization that demands even more Danish support for electric cars. In fact, Mobility Denmark believes that support for electric cars should be in the Finance Act. Read more about it here .
