Electric car sales are plummeting – importers want government subsidies

After sales of electric cars plummeted within the EU in July, the Danish car importers – now Mobility Denmark – again point to the need for more state support.

In July, around 850,000 new cars were registered on the roads in the EU, which is only a modest increase of 0.2 percent compared to July 2022.

Despite this quiet month, car sales over the course of the year have increased by 3.9 percent compared to the same period last year. This means that more than 6,500,000 new cars have been sold in the EU since January.

This is what the Danish car importers' interest organization Mobility Denmark writes in a press release .

– July is typically a quieter month for car sales, which applies both in Denmark and in the rest of the EU. We are pleased that car sales have nevertheless grown slightly, and that the year-to-date result looks reasonable, says director Mads Rorvig.

In 2024, electric car sales in the EU have faced challenges. In a market like Germany, interest in electric cars has now collapsed for the seventh consecutive month. This is because, back in December 2023, the country's government removed all support for electric cars with immediate effect in order to patch up holes in the state's economy.

Falling sales continued in June and July. In the past month, sales of electric cars, when all EU countries are taken into account, have fallen by almost 11 percent.

This puts the number of new electric cars somewhat below the level from the same period last year. Mobility Denmark believes, however, that the Danish market is a bright spot. Here, sales of electric cars have grown by just under 69 percent. It only goes better in the Czech Republic and Croatia.

Nevertheless, the car importers are calling for the Danish state to throw even more subsidy kroner at electric cars to keep sales up. Even if in that case it happens under artificial conditions.

– We are happy about the excellent level of electric car sales in Denmark, but at the same time the general development in the EU is worrying.

– This shows that in several places there are too bad conditions for the spread of electric cars, which will be a brake block for the green transition.

– It is absolutely central that from a political point of view the right framework and incentives are created for more electric cars – and even though things are going strong in Denmark now, it is important that taxes continue to be kept calm if electric car sales are to continue to grow, says Mads Rorvig, managing director of Mobility Denmark.
