Was Denmark's most popular car – now sales are plummeting

Tesla was not just Denmark's but Europe's most popular car all of last year. 2024 hurts the Americans, because sales plummet, new figures show.

Model Y was the best-selling car in all of Denmark and Europe in 2023. But 2024 hurts Tesla. Sales plummeted, and in July the Model Y dropped out of the top 20.

With 9,820 new Model Ys throughout Europe during the month of July, Tesla has to settle for 20th place when it comes to new car sales. Otherwise, the Model 3 performs even worse at an overall 70th place.

That's what Automotive News writes.

This means that Tesla has been overtaken by BMW for the first time ever. At least when it comes to the sale of pure electric cars.

629 cars were what separated the two brands in July. Tesla delivered a total of 14,561 cars last month, while BMW managed to deliver 14,869 cars at the same time. The figures include the EU and EFTA countries as well as England.

In total, Tesla's sales have fallen by 16 percent in the past month. Perhaps because more buyers are waiting for a facelifted Model Y. Meanwhile, Volkswagen, which was in second place just one year ago, has also fallen to third place, because the Germans only got 12,177 new electric cars out in the period.

It is especially on the German market, where sales of electric cars have now collapsed for the 7th month in a row, that the electric cars are hurting. Because while the car type has never had a large share of the Danish market, the Germans turn their backs when there is no government support to be had.

The state subsidy for electric cars was immediately abolished in Germany back in December last year. It happened because the country's government urgently needed to patch a hole in the state budget. Already the following month, sales of electric cars fell by more than half of the level from January 2023.
