Tesla avoids recall despite 426 faults

In at least 426 cases, Tesla owners have told authorities about control arms breaking. But now the car brand is free to recall the cars.

In at least 426 cases, the US traffic safety authorities have heard from Tesla owners whose cars have been stranded due to broken control arms.

The problem has also reached our part of the globe. Caroline Torbjörnsen is one of those who experienced the unfortunate phenomenon. The undercarriage of her Tesla Model S threw a control arm.

"I could be dead," she says.

But Tesla does not have to do anything to make the owners fashionable. After four years of investigating the problem, the US traffic safety authorities NHTSA has chosen only to recommend that Tesla replace the defective control arms.

This is written by Electrek .

– The investigation has identified 426 cases of failure of part number 1041570-00-A or 1041575-00-A, support arms.

– None of the cases resulted in a loss of control over the electric cars. One minor accident without injury is associated with the 426 cases of failure of the support arms. A majority of the errors occurred at between 1 and 15 km/h when parking in junctions or in car parks.

– In the eight cases where the electric cars were traveling more than 40 mph (64 km/h) and the front suspension arm broke, the corvette remained controllable without causing a collision or injury, NHTSA writes.

NHTSA therefore does not believe that the broken suspension arms, which are especially a problem on the Tesla Model S, constitute any real problem. At least not in terms of security.

The fault has also been found on cars that Tesla has sold to Europeans. But here too, so far, the authorities are not doing anything about it. In Sweden, however, the authorities are looking into a number of complaints about the problem.
