Thieves steal entire battery packs in electric cars, police warn

It has become more difficult to steal new cars. But in part it can still be done. And now the thieves are running off with entire battery packs.

It has become much more difficult to steal new cars, so the thieves go after valuable individual parts instead. Recently, they have started running with whole battery packs.

This is the warning from the Norwegian police, where they have already received reports of the first thefts of this kind.

This is what Norwegian police write on social media .

Earlier this year, there was a whole wave of thefts from newer cars here, where the thieves especially got away with very expensive mirrors and mirror glass. Something that could easily cost the owners several thousand kroner to replace.

But now at least the thieves in Norway have had a better time. Because some of them simply run off with entire battery packs for electric cars.

Right now, it's especially the hybrid cars that are going beyond. The Toyota models Corolla and RAV4 are particularly popular victims.

– Recently, there have been several thefts from such cars. The perpetrators entered through a small opening directly behind the rear window, took out the back seats and stole the battery packs, according to law enforcement.

In this connection, the police can only encourage the owners to take extra care of their cars for the time being. In addition, it is a good idea to take several precautions.

– If you have such a car or know someone who has one, you must pay extra attention and also look at the possibilities of installing an alarm system.

– It may also be a good idea to park the car in extra good lighting to make a theft act as a deterrent for potential perpetrators, says the police.

It is also not without reason that thieves now go after entire battery packs. Something like this alone for a hybrid-powered Toyota easily costs up to 40,000 Danish kroner. And there is really no second-hand market for that type of battery.

So if the battery disappears in a theft, there is only one way. Namely an order for a new battery directly from Toyota. And not only is it expensive. The delivery time can also be very long.
