BMW sells more electric cars than Tesla throughout Europe

It is the first time ever that BMW has surpassed Tesla when it comes to sales of pure electric cars in Europe. The figures from July do not lie.

For the first time ever, BMW has sold more electric cars than Tesla, which only sells electric cars, across Europe.

Because while Tesla's total sales in Europe – due to a meltdown in the German market – lost 16 percent of its sales in our latitudes, it went forward for BMW.

Tesla managed to sell 14,561, while BMW sold 14,869 electric cars at the same time. Granted, it is a few hundred cars that separate the two car brands, but nevertheless it is an advantage for the Germans from Munich.

The news about BMW's better sales – at least compared to Tesla – comes at the same time that figures from the EU show that sales of electric cars in Europe are generally declining. Over the course of July, overall, it fell by 6 percent.

– The lack of clarity around incentives for, and the future of, electric cars remains an obstacle for consumers. These factors, along with the low residual value of electric cars, contributed to the decline seen in July, says Felipe Munoz, analyst at research firm Jato Dynamics, in a press release .

However, Tesla can boast that, at least in the Danish market, it is also only marginally behind BMW. And it has to be taken really literally. Just two cars separate those car factories from each other in BMW's favor here at home. BMW sold 708 cars to the Danes in the period, Tesla had to make do with 706 cars.

During the first half of the year, however, Tesla still has the upper hand. Only Volkswagen has – according to ID.4 – sold more cars with Danish license plates than the Americans. In that account, BMW has to settle for 7th place.
