Electric cars cost much more than petrol cars – Opel is the worst

Electric cars cost an average of 21 percent more than new petrol and diesel cars, a new German estimate shows. However, Opel blows the scale.

An electric car can be very cheap to own if you can afford to buy one. And it is not certain that this is the case.

A new German survey shows that electric cars are, on average, 21 percent more expensive to purchase than their corresponding counterparts with petrol or diesel engines.

This is the conclusion of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) after reviewing the price of 20 car models on the German market.

The analysis is based on the cars' list price minus any discounts. And here there is not much to discuss. In fact, nothing at all. The electric cars are just more expensive.

And actually significantly more expensive. If you convert the price into Danish kroner, the Germans' review shows that the electric cars cost an average of DKK 334,000. Then an average discount of 12.9 percent must be deducted. Therefore, the price ends at DKK 291,000.

The corresponding model with combustion engine is lowered even more. Namely with 15 percent. Therefore, it also ends up with a price of just over DKK 240,000.

In addition, there are big differences between the brands. Brands such as Peugeot, Nissan and MG have extremely large differences between the car types when it comes to combustion engine or the corresponding electric car.

The situation is worst at Opel, where it is 79 percent more expensive to buy a new electric Corsa, Corsa-e, than the one with a petrol engine.

In comparison, the electric BMW X1 costs just six percent more than the model with a combustion engine, and the Mercedes is around the same level.

– It is striking that German premium brands, especially BMW, make the price difference between the electric and combustion versions so small, says Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, head of CAR, in a press release .
