Old idea must save BMW's new internal combustion engines

Using an ancient technology that the first diesel engines in passenger cars used, BMW will lower both consumption and emission figures from brand new petrol cars.

BMW produces enough electric cars. The brand from Munich has also loudly criticized the EU's ban on the internal combustion engine from 2035. Now the Germans are trying to strike back.

And actually with an ancient technology that was already in use when the first passenger cars started to drive around with diesel engines.

This is written by the German Auto Motor und Sport .

Specifically, BMW has applied for patent protection for a new type of petrol engine that uses the otherwise retired technology from diesel cars.

The idea is to use a so-called pre-chamber which, during the combustion of the fuel, is connected to the actual combustion chamber. The engine then sends a mixture of air and fuel into the pre-chamber, where it is ignited by a special spark plug, for the mixture is again sent into the combustion chamber.

In this way, the consumption and emissions from the car's exhaust will be reduced significantly compared to the cars that are already on the roads now.

In the past, the car factories used the pre-chamber principle in older diesel cars (then new, ed.) to make them perform better at low speeds, reduce the noise level and generally deliver a smoother engine run.

As is usually the case with patent applications, it is not at all certain that BMW intends to take the idea seriously. However, you prevent other car brands from getting and using exactly the same idea. The patent application is also no guarantee that the technique/idea will work in practice.

All in all, these days it's some pretty wild ideas, the car factories around the world are turning and turning. At Ferrari, for example, they have applied for the patent on an internal combustion engine that, with its bottom in the air, burns not petrol but hydrogen. Read more about it here .
