Electric car batteries can be made from stone, says Danish researcher

In the future, batteries for e.g. electric cars may be made of something that already floats. Namely, completely ordinary stones. A Danish researcher thinks so.

Instead of the both expensive and environmentally harmful lithium, the electric cars of the future may be able to run around with batteries made of quite ordinary stones.

Researchers from DTU in Lyngby have found that out. And not only that. The team behind the discovery has taken out a patent for a solution that makes it possible to replace lithium with stone.

This is written by TV2 Kosmopol .

– We are replacing lithium with this solid piece. In fact, you can cut from this and make more batteries, says engineer Mohamad Khoshkalam about the patent for the medium.

Holding the researchers' patent in the real world, the result has actually done two things for the development of the electric car. Namely reduced the price of the material and the actual production of the battery.

Another investigation by the US environmental authorities concludes that batteries for electric cars have already become 90 percent cheaper over the past 15 years. Read more about it here.

So perhaps the invention from Lyngby can push the price down even further. Batteries made of ordinary stones, which can in principle be collected anywhere, are not just around the corner, however.

Speaking to TV2 Kosmopol, Mohamad Khoshkalam reckons that it will take between seven and ten years, because we see the technology widespread in the industry. It all depends on how much finance is poured into the project.

It has already taken the Danish research team three years just to get to where they are today. However, it is not only here at home that the development of batteries is being carefully looked at. On the other side of the world, Volvo's owner already promises to have the electric car battery that can last for 50 years. Read more about it here .
